                                    Singers wanted

Rubislaw Parish Church – a Church of Scotland situated in the west end of Aberdeen, at the corner of Queen’s Road and Fountainhall Road – seeks to appoint student singers to all sections of its Choir – Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass. The Choir is a small but committed group of singers who wish to encourage and develop singing in young people, to allow them to advance their musical experience within the context of choral singing. The current repertoire ranges from Renaissance to more modern anthems, though this is determined by the number of parts available. The period of appointment will be for one academic session – October-June, with the possibility of extension to further sessions.

Requirements

The student singer will

      have a basic understanding of music, including reading music, and have some experience in
      choir participation, particularly singing in parts;

      attend practices and services during the Choir season: the beginning of October until the
      Advent/Nine Lessons and Carols service in early-mid December; early January until Easter
      Day (if that falls within term time); mid-late April to mid-June (unless term ends before that
      time);

      be prepared to commit to attending a weekly Choir Practice – currently Thursday 4.30pm to
      6.00pm – during term time;

      be prepared to attend the Sunday Morning service at 10.30am during term time be able to
      support the Choir in learning and performing the anthem(s) chosen by the Director of Music;

      be entitled to 4 weekends’ leave during the season.

Value

The student singer will

      be paid £10.00 per service, monthly in arrears, provided attendance requirements are fulfilled.

Applicants should indicate Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass, and give details of their previous choral experience, along with full contact details.

On receipt of applications we would issue invitations to attend a Choir practice and Sunday service to get to know the Choir and the church, before requiring a commitment to these posts. Although there is no formal interview, some demonstration of basic musical skills and some proficiency in singing in parts will be expected. Initial appointment would be for a probation period of 3 months, to be reviewed, and extended or terminated at that point by the Kirk Session, in conjunction with the Director of Music. If, during the probation period, the student singer wishes to terminate the appointment, pro rata payment would be made. If, at any time during the period of appointment, attendance is deemed unsatisfactory, the Kirk Session, in conjunction with the Director of Music, will terminate the appointment.

Letters of application should be sent to The Director of Music, Rubislaw Parish Church, c/o The Secretary, Rubislaw Church Centre, 1 Beaconsfield Place, ABERDEEN, AB15 4AB (rubislawchurch@btconnect.com)
